rionaleonhart: final fantasy x-2: the sun is rising, yuna looks to the future. (Default)
Well, it turns out that, when I'm trying not to update my journal, I just resort to miserably playing Solitaire to procrastinate, which achieves even less and makes me unhappy. Whilst I tear out my hair over whether to analyse every sentence or every independent clause or every clause, dependent or not, in these book blurbs (RIONA, STOP PANICKING SO MUCH. Yes, you have quite a lot to write, but you have a third of a year in which to write it. Even if you average only two hundred words a day you will be fine. Now work on your Austen essay until you have a chance to talk to your supervisor about this), have some tiny ficsnippets I wrote a little while ago for an 'alphabetically pair up the characters in your icons' meme I failed to finish.

Fandoms represented: Ōkami, Merlin, Top Gear, Supernatural, Derren Brown, Doctor Who, Final Fantasy XII, Life on Mars, House, Harry Potter, Pokémon, Jak II, Scrubs, Kingdom Hearts, Death Note, The Mentalist, Silent Hill 2, Final Fantasy VIII, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Final Fantasy X and, er, Final Fantasy Versus XIII. )

I sort of want to see the kids from Homestuck as the Doctor's companions. Is that wrong of me?
rionaleonhart: final fantasy x-2: the sun is rising, yuna looks to the future. (NOOOOOOOOO)
...okay, guys, I am attempting to use my icon of a poorly-drawn Albus Dumbledore yelling 'NOOOOOOOOO'. Please tell me that you do not see an icon of a disgruntled-looking baby with some Russian writing underneath it instead. Clearing the cache does nothing! I am most put out by this turn of events!

You know what does not put me out, however? Avatar. I have now watched up to 'The Puppetmaster'.

Regarding 'The Beach': I love Ty Lee! She is wonderful. Hooray for cheerful, perky, adorable antagonists!

Also, Zuko is an amazing idiot. I adore him, but he makes me roll my eyes so much.

Regarding 'The Puppetmaster': [livejournal.com profile] echogarrote told me that this episode would prove that Derren Brown is a Waterbender. It is so true. Also, that was really creepy.

Regarding Avatar in general: I love that the characters' hair grows over time, episode by episode. Physical change just isn't something that happens in most cartoons. When we first met Zuko, he had a ponytail, then he cut his hair very short, and now it has grown out to the point at which he can tie it up again. There is a real sense of time passing in Avatar, and I think the physical changes in the characters have a lot to do with that.

Here, completely unrelatedly, is a terrible theory regarding the cause behind Sam's 'time travel' in Life on Mars.

"Hello, Sam."

Sam must be going mad, if he's not mad already. It's ridiculous, and it's definitely not the right year, but he swears the man looks exactly like Derren Brown.

1973 is completely still around them: Gene frozen in his doorway, Chris and Ray caught in the middle of having a conversation. Apart from Sam, Derren is the only thing moving. He runs a hand along the edge of a desk, winces, rubs his gloved fingertips together to get rid of the dust.

"You're not from here," Sam says.

Derren smiles, enigmatically.

"How did I get here?" Sam demands. "How do I get back?"

"A while ago," Derren says, " - well, I say a while ago, but I suppose from your perspective it's thirty-three years from now - I approached you in your workplace and offered you two cards. Do you remember that?"

Sam stares. Eventually, he manages to say, "What do you mean, 'from my perspective'?"

Derren gives a satisfied nod. "You don't remember? Excellent."
rionaleonhart: final fantasy versus xiii: a young woman at night, her back to you, the moon high above. (nor women neither)
It is very important that you watch this. It is one of the weirdest videogame moments I have ever come across, from the third Ratchet and Clank game. It is a robotic version of Britney Spears singing about the robot revolution. It contains the lyrics 'Don't stop until we dominate; won't you feel great/When we exterminate all organic life?' It is also ridiculously catchy.

Also, here is a trailer for Final Fantasy Versus XIII, a game that - I think this is right - is to be set in the same world as Final Fantasy XIII but otherwise unconnected. I don't know about you, but I think it looks freaking awesome. A little short on women, perhaps, but it looks as if XIII itself may be largely dominated by female characters, so perhaps they'll balance each other.

(I feel like the most ridiculous person ever for getting an icon of a game that hasn't even been released in Japan yet. YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED IT, RIONA. YOU MIGHT NOT EVEN LIKE THE CHARACTER. But it's so pretty!

...I suppose I no longer have the right to mock people who write fanfiction before a game exists in playable form anywhere, then. Although I still don't understand how that works. 'The girl with pink hair caught sight of that red-haired girl with pigtails. She said, "Hey, [insert Pigtail Girl's name here]!", assuming that she knew Pigtail Girl's name and it was appropriate to her character to greet Pigtail Girl in such a way. Pigtail Girl acknowledged her in a character-appropriate manner, unless she was more likely to ignore her, in which case I suppose she ignored her.')

The night before last, I dreamt that [livejournal.com profile] reipan was Gretchen from Prison Break. She shot me four times. YOU'RE A RUBBISH FRIEND, [livejournal.com profile] reipan.

There is a Female Characters Drabble-a-thon going on at the moment! If you're like me and feel that you don't write about female characters nearly often enough, here's your chance to redress the balance. (Sadly, there are almost no videogame prompts.)

Also, a rather fun meme. Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] eva_kasumi:

- Arrange the characters in your icons in alphabetical order.
- Pair the first character up with the second, the third up with the fourth and so on.
- Write a mini-ficlet about every pairing.
- Profit!

The results of my attempt at this are under the cut in varying degrees of cop-outness. It starts with Albus Dumbledore/Allison Cameron and goes downhill from there.

Perhaps I shouldn't have included the Pokémon. )

Do you ever upload a new icon and use it for the first time and find yourself completely bowled over by how right it feels? That's the effect I've got from this Dean icon by [livejournal.com profile] iconseeyou. Yes, all right, I know that Dean is hotter, but it still feels like me.

Question time! What is your fanfiction guilty pleasure? Personally, no matter how ridiculous a cliché it may be, I'm always rather partial to a 'the characters discover fanfiction about themselves' fic or two. And tell me with an icon that seems inexplicably right for you.

Today, I asked my brother whether he would be interested in going on a roadtrip to fight demons. He suggested going on a roadtrip to commit crime instead. We're probably never going to be the heroes.

I have now watched 'Salvation', and it is such a struggle not to move straight on to 'The Devil's Trap'. I HATE YOU, SELF-IMPOSED EPISODE RATIONING. Oh, well, I'll just watch the 'Previously On' set to 'Carry On Wayward Son' over and over again. Shut up; you know it's awesome.

(Oh, Dean, you and your obsessive to-the-exclusion-of-all-else love for your family. It is so very unhealthy, but it is also so beautiful. And I can't really blame you, because I appear to have a slightly worrying obsession with your family as well.)

I have just discovered 'What if the Mary who wrote the letter to James Sunderland were actually Mary Winchester? HILARIOUS MISUNDERSTANDINGS FOR ALL' written in the notebook I keep beside my bed for deranged late-night fanfiction ideas. No, self, that's stupid. Also stupid is the fact that I cannot watch Sam having one of his painful visions without thinking of him as Harry Potter when Voldemort is nearby. WHY MUST MY CROSSOVER-ORIENTED BRAIN DESTROY EVERYTHING? (Actually, that Voldemort one is mainly the fault of icon number twenty-four in this batch. It is absolute genius, but it is also completely tension-ruining. (Number seven makes me think of John Winchester as James Sunderland, for some reason, which is a direction in which I really do not want my mind to go. But my 'MARY WINCHESTER WROTE THE LETTER' idea was already sort of going there, I suppose. Oh, dear, I do not want this to become as firmly established in my mind as the image of Sam and Dean in Team Rocket uniforms.))

Regarding my worries about having somewhere to live next year: a fellow English Language student has said that I may be able to rent her daughter's room if said daughter moves away for her studies. It's not a sure offer, but it is an offer, and I am sort of incredibly touched by it.

Cut for more writer's angst. Basic summary: THE SUPERNATURAL FANDOM IS TOO GOOD AND IT MAKES ME WANT TO CRY. )

Right! As an apology for inflicting that upon you, because this journal is supposed to be a happy place, I bring you some icons you never even knew you needed. Use, edit, et cetera as you will. (You may also take the plain-black-border version of the first that I am using.)

Does anyone actually read the alt text? I mean, seriously.

Yes, I know this is a bit rubbish. I'd like to say that's the point, but it isn't.

These are quite fun to make. So I don't really care that nobody is going to use them.

I have to say, I always suspected that my first venture into icon-making would be like this. The concept is, admittedly, better than the execution. Although I am quite pleased with the way the Dean/Haunter icons came out. TRUE LOVE FOR EVER.

(In the interest of getting more people to put Pokémon where they do not belong and also because they ask very nicely to be credited if their images are used, PokéBeach is a good website for Pokémon pictures.)

A while ago, there was a meme along the lines of 'arrange all the characters you have icons of in alphabetical order, pair them up accordingly, talk a bit about the pairings that result' going around. And, y'know, why not?

Listed in alphabetical order by first name. I've omitted poor old Dumbledore, because I didn't have an even number of characters and I'd really prefer not to have to consider Albus Dumbledore/Allison Cameron. Yes, I'm a shameless cheater.

Pairings from the adorable to the nonsensical to the horrifically scarring, hurrah! )
