rionaleonhart: the coffin of andy and leyley: andrew glances back over his shoulder, expressionless. (this is who you are now)
It's absolutely horrible fanfiction time!

If anyone prefers to read on AO3, I should mention that you won't currently find this on my AO3 account, because I've posted it anonymously for now; it's over here.

I've chosen to post this anonymously at first because, uh, I was recently interviewed about fanfiction for a newspaper article. I don't know whether I'll actually end up getting mentioned in the final article, but, if I am, I don't want unsuspecting newspaper readers to wander over to my AO3 account and discover this as the most recent fic on it; it's a little intense!

Particularly sharp-eyed readers may note that I've given the first warden a gun, when only the second warden had one in canon. This is because I can do what I want and you can't stop me.

Title: we're not going to do better next time
Fandom: The Coffin of Andy and Leyley
Rating: 16
Pairing: Andrew/Ashley
Wordcount: 2,700
Summary: Andrew is caught in a time loop. Infinite chances to get this right. It doesn't help.
Warnings: Sibling incest, (temporary) suicide, abuse, allusions to sexual assault, generally kind of fucked up.

we're not going to do better next time )
rionaleonhart: kingdom hearts: sora, riku and kairi having a friendly chat. (and they returned home)
It is increasingly difficult to write spoiler-free summaries for Severance fanfiction. Here is an AU for the most recent episode.

Warnings: Severance spoilers up to episode 2.07, 'Chikhai Bardo'.

The Long Road Home )
rionaleonhart: final fantasy versus xiii: a young woman at night, her back to you, the moon high above. (nor women neither)
I have tried so hard to write Mark Scout/Mark S selfcest, but I might have to admit defeat. If I can't get these two to kiss in this situation, I don't know if it's ever going to happen.

Title: Null
Fandom: Severance
Rating: PG-13
Wordcount: 1,700
Summary: Mark has a heart-to-heart with himself.
Warnings: Severance spoilers up to episode 2.06, 'Attila'.

Null )
rionaleonhart: the mentalist: lisbon, with time counting down, makes an important call. (it's been an honour)
Holy shit, I've finally managed to get the whole Macrodata Refinement team into bed together. Success at last! All I had to do was, uh, inflict a load of trauma.

For a while, I thought I wouldn't be able to write this fic; I liked the concept, but I just couldn't pin down how to make it work. It turned out the problem was that I was trying to plot it out from Irving's perspective, which meant it was difficult to make the opening clear. The instant I switched to Helly's perspective, the words started coming!

Title: Finding Air
Fandom: Severance
Rating: 15
Pairing: Helly R/Mark S/Dylan G/Irving B, Helly R & Irving B

Summary: Irving makes a terrible mistake on the ORTBO.
Warnings: Severance spoilers up to episode 2.04, 'Woe's Hollow'.

Finding Air )
rionaleonhart: final fantasy xiii: lightning pays intense attention to you. (speak carefully)
This is the sixth Severance fic I've posted in approximately three weeks. I am absolutely losing my mind about this show.

Wordcount: 3,300
Summary: Helena's loyalties start to shift.
Warnings: Allusions to consent issues. Severance spoilers up to episode 2.04, 'Woe's Hollow'.

rionaleonhart: final fantasy xiii: lightning pays intense attention to you. (speak carefully)
Here is a Severance fic that's mainly just me (and also Mark) trying to get a grip on who Helena is.

Title: Anthropology
Fandom: Severance

Wordcount: 3,200
Summary: Mark tries to understand Helly's outie.

rionaleonhart: top gear: the start button on a bugatti veyron. (going down tonight)
I watched the latest episode of Severance ('Who Is Alive?') and immediately lost my mind. Twenty-four hours later, here I am, posting a fic.

Title: Overwritten
Fandom: Severance
Rating: PG-13
Wordcount: 2,100
Summary: Mark, immediately after episode 2.03.

Overwritten )
rionaleonhart: top gear: the start button on a bugatti veyron. (going down tonight)
When's the last time I watched a show as it came out, week by week? It must have been over a decade. In the gaps between episodes, I find myself writing Severance fanfiction with a kind of fevered desperation, trying to spend more time with these characters in any way I can.

This is set in the first season and has no spoilers for the second!

Title: Double-Sided
Fandom: Severance
Rating: G
Wordcount: 1,600
Summary: Mark and his outie find a way to communicate.

Double-Sided )
rionaleonhart: top gear: the start button on a bugatti veyron. (going down tonight)
My quest to write Macrodata Refinement OT4 fanfiction continues! I almost managed it this time. One day!

(How many fics can one person write about a flustered Mark S ending up in inappropriate situations with his colleagues? It'll never be enough, frankly.)

This is set in the first season of Severance and contains no spoilers for the second! If you'd like to leave a comment (thank you so much!), I'd really appreciate it if you avoided mentioning any details from the latest episode, s2e2; I haven't had a chance to watch it yet.

Title: A Duty to Ourselves
Fandom: Severance
Rating: 15
Pairing: Mark S/Helly R/Dylan G, with slight Mark/Helly/Dylan/Irving elements
Wordcount: 1,500
Summary: “Good to know,” Helly says. “I’d better get started on banging everyone in Macrodata Refinement.”

A Duty to Ourselves )
rionaleonhart: death note: light's kind of embarrassed that he poured all that fake sincerity into an obviously doomed ploy. (guess not)
I've slowed down a little on writing these, but I'm up to twenty fills for the 2025 [community profile] threesentenceficathon! I'm still having such a blast with this event. You can find the current prompting post here.

Death Note, Light, 470 words, prompt: antagonist time travels back to the start. )

Death Note, L/Light, 290 words, prompt: 'Night by night, I let you eat me alive.' )

Ace Attorney, Apollo/Athena and Apollo/Clay, 540 words, prompt: Clay's spirit gives dating advice. )

And, finally, a Severance ficlet! It's set in the first season and has no spoilers for the second, but please be aware that it contains, uh, severe and malicious misuse of tampons.

Severance, Helly, 260 words, prompt: within you. )

I was so thrilled to see a prompt for Apollo/Athena specifically! It's my favourite Ace Attorney pairing, and it's a relatively small ship within the fandom, so seeing that really took me by surprise.
rionaleonhart: top gear: the start button on a bugatti veyron. (going down tonight)
I keep trying and failing to write Macrodata Refinement OT4 fanfiction for Severance. My first attempt ended up being a Mark/Helly fic; this one ended up being a Mark/Dylan fic. Can't wait to accidentally write a Mark/Irving fic on my next attempt.

This is set in the first season; there are no spoilers for the second in here!

Title: Practical Research
Fandom: Severance
Rating: 14
Pairing: Mark S/Dylan G
Wordcount: 1,200
Summary: Mark’s straight, apparently. Or his outie said he’s straight, at least, and he guesses his outie would know.

Practical Research )
rionaleonhart: the coffin of andy and leyley: andrew glances back over his shoulder, expressionless. (this is who you are now)
Who wants to read some hideous incest? I really hope someone wants to read some hideous incest, because apparently that's what I've written.

The working title for this fic on my laptop was 'andy and leyley don't read this.doc'. I don't usually write anything this intense, and I'm slightly nervous about it!

This fic was inspired by this (extremely NSFW and slightly dark; heads-up for incest and nonconsensual voyeurism) piece of fanart by susperia_- on Reddit.

Title: Excuses
Fandom: The Coffin of Andy and Leyley
Rating: 16
Pairing: Andrew/Ashley
Wordcount: 900
Summary: He probably shouldn’t be getting into the habit of doing this every night, he tells himself, like it’d be normal and fine once a week.
Warnings: Sibling incest, nonconsensual voyeurism.

Excuses )

I never expected to write one Clive/Joshua fic, let alone two! But, when I posted Regrets last year, the Roscest fans were just so lovely and passionate that it really made me want to write more for them.

Title: Where It Leaves Us
Fandom: Final Fantasy XVI
Rating: 14
Pairing: Joshua/Clive
Wordcount: 2,100
Summary: Clive and Joshua, trapped forever in the interdimensional rift.
Warnings: Incest.

Where It Leaves Us )
rionaleonhart: kingdom hearts: riku, blindfolded and smiling slightly. (we'll be the darkness)
I'm fairly certain I originally started writing this fic over eleven years ago. I'd conceived of a series of fics in which I took classic fluffy fanfiction premises and ruined them by adding Komaeda. In the end, I only wrote Forecast Bleak, in which Komaeda ruins huddling for warmth.

But now I've finally finished writing this, in which Komaeda ruins nursing someone back to health!

Title: The Fine Print of Gratitude
Fandom: Danganronpa 2
Rating: PG-13
Wordcount: 4,000
Summary: Komaeda nurses Hinata back to health after a murder attempt. Well, yes, Komaeda's the one who tried to kill him in the first place, but let's not worry too much about the details.
Content notes: Hinata is temporarily bedridden and a little freaked out about it.

For each of my major fandoms, I do a short writeup talking about how it fits into my fandom history. A fandom qualifies as 'major' if I've written five fics for it, or ten thousand words across at least three fics.

Nemlei visual novels

'Riona, this is not a fandom. You can't just throw six different visual novels together and call them a fandom because they share a creator and some thematic and tonal similarities.'

I can and I will.

I first became aware of Nemlei's work in April 2023, when a friend recommended The Coffin of Andy and Leyley to me on Discord. 'If you like two siblings stuck in a house, this is ur game,' she said. I liked the look of the artwork, and 'two siblings stuck in a house' is exactly my sort of thing, so I really let myself down by not checking it out straight away!

Six months later, in October 2023, [personal profile] cardboardpapercuts messaged me on Dreamwidth to say, 'I was wondering if you've played The Coffin of Andy and Leyley? I'd love to hear your thoughts on the game if you have, or if you do in the future!'

The fact that two people had now independently recommended this game to me really made it stick in my mind; it was now firmly on my 'I should probably check this out at some point' list. A year later, [personal profile] cardboardpapercuts made the incredibly generous offer to buy me a copy; I declined the offer, but the fact that someone had gone 'I believe so strongly this is Riona's thing that I'd be willing to buy it for her' made me go 'okay, I am definitely going to check this out now.'

I played The Coffin of Andy and Leyley at the age of thirty-six and fell in love with it immediately. It's fucked-up, funny and fascinating in exactly the right balance. I started writing fanfiction when I was only an hour in. Perhaps I should be concerned that multiple people went 'I know exactly who needs to play this incest and cannibalism game!' and came straight to me, but I'm just grateful that they did.

I promptly tore my way through the rest of Nemlei's work and had a great time. An absolute treasure trove of dark comedy and messed-up character dynamics. The Coffin of Andy and Leyley remains my favourite, but I also really enjoyed Better Half.

Will I learn from this experience to check out recommendations earlier? Let's be honest: probably not. But I'm very glad I managed to get around to this one.

Favourite character: Oh, hmm, maybe Andrew? He's so interestingly broken in ways that might not be apparent at first glance, and his feelings about his sister are such a complicated, fascinating tangle.
Favourite pairing: Andrew/Ashley is a hideous, awful mess that I want to examine under a microscope. I really like the touch that, even in the midst of their absolute trainwreck of a relationship, they're very physically affectionate (perhaps too physically affectionate) and often make each other laugh. Thiu/Thiu is in second place. Nemlei's games are great for pairings that are a weird blend of cute and messed-up.
Number of words written: 9,634 across five fics: one for Better Half, one for Divilethion and three for The Coffin of Andy and Leyley.

Snippet: Here's a tiny Coffin of Andy and Leyley snippet I scribbled down on a train.

Coffin of Andy and Leyley unfinished snippet, Ashley and Andrew, 2024. )

My notes after this snippet read '(cue some sort of sexy stabbing education, Andrew standing against her back and guiding her hands to cut someone's throat?? I probably won't actually write this.)'
rionaleonhart: revolutionary girl utena: utena has fallen asleep on her schoolwork. (sort of exhausted really)
Titles are something I've always struggled with when writing fanfiction. I thought I'd take a look back at the fics I've posted this year and note down exactly why I chose the titles I did.

What I'm hoping is that, if I force myself to think consciously about why I choose story titles, the process might become a little easier in future. And, hey, even if it doesn't help, it might be an interesting exercise.

In reverse chronological order, my fic titles for this year:

Rambling about why I chose fic titles. )

I've kept an eye out for patterns during this title analysis exercise, and what I've deduced is that I like ironic titles and titles with dual meanings or dual relevance. And, er, absolute copout titles where I just grab the first half-relevant word I can think of.
