rionaleonhart: final fantasy x-2: the sun is rising, yuna looks to the future. (can't tear us apart)

I Have The Stupidest Hobbies Ever.

Maaaan. I love the Supernatural fandom, but it is so full of incredible fanfiction that I just feel completely inadequate. In most of my fandoms before this one I have been able to feel that I am at least a better-than-average writer, and all of a sudden I have been dropped into this world in which the average is stupendously good and I am going to have to fight incredibly hard if I want to impress anyone.

Stupid writer's insecurity. I can't remember the last time I was so nervous about submitting my fic to a community.

I want to write something amazing. How do people write amazing things?

(Still, of course, there's the not inconsiderable upside of having infinite amounts of brilliant fanfiction to read. Hurrah!)

Right! As an apology for inflicting that upon you, because this journal is supposed to be a happy place, I bring you some icons you never even knew you needed. Use, edit, et cetera as you will. (You may also take the plain-black-border version of the first that I am using.)

Does anyone actually read the alt text? I mean, seriously.

Yes, I know this is a bit rubbish. I'd like to say that's the point, but it isn't.

These are quite fun to make. So I don't really care that nobody is going to use them.

I have to say, I always suspected that my first venture into icon-making would be like this. The concept is, admittedly, better than the execution. Although I am quite pleased with the way the Dean/Haunter icons came out. TRUE LOVE FOR EVER.

(In the interest of getting more people to put Pokémon where they do not belong and also because they ask very nicely to be credited if their images are used, PokéBeach is a good website for Pokémon pictures.)

...See now we need a moving icon, where the doctor, with his thumbs up, starts moving them like a Clefairy would.

Clefairy! Clefairy!

Oh. OH! Or a Pikachu going into a thundershock and then, when he's all electric-lit up, regenerating into Ten! I so see it!

I can't actually edit a photo to save my life. Is there an escape clause?

SPN writers really are the best I've ever seen. Some of them make me want to weep with inadequacy. I always feel like I'm middle of the pack, jostling for position! However, I also think that writing in his fandom has upped my game A LOT. Which is always a good thing. I don't think you should be nervous about submitting anything you write, however. I've read you stuff. It deserves to be put out there for it is made of all good things. For sure.

[magi] All of my major writing advances have been a process of me finding someone who makes me want to curl up in a corner and weep with inadequacy, and then going "Well, fine, then. I'M GONNA BE GOOD TOO."

Well, that and learning to read my own work with a considering eye, and being mindful of the things I do like, and being a part of various workshops, but mostly it's the raging envy.

[identity profile] the-funmonkey.livejournal.com 2008-02-21 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I have the same fear of SPN fandom. I have written one fic, it is 7,000 words long and I spent six months writing it. Six months of endless re-writes, screaming obscenities and smashing my face into the desk.

For a comparison, my 7,000 word Top Gear fic took me two weeks and was nothing but a joy to write.

BUT, seeing how well your first fic went down, you shouldn't worry so much. You've really got a hang of it.

What pokemon is it with the Master, and why did you pick it???

/clueless (and using own icon)

Thank you! I've been planning to make more polished versions now I have GIMP, but my free time's being eaten up by Big Bang.

And I read a short fic where Gene and Annie become the Master's companions- I wish I could find it again, it was brilliant.

[identity profile] newbie1990.livejournal.com 2008-02-21 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm mildly offended that the icon you dismiss as 'a bit rubbish' is my favourite. His expression. 'HOW DARE YOU CLAIM THAT HAVING A POKEMON IS NOT NORMAL BEHAVIOUR FOR A POLITICIAN. LIES, I SAY.'

Also DDD:, that is EXACTLY HOW I FELT ABOUT SCRUBS FANDOM. Are there any bad writers in that fandom, or have I just been lucky? (Although admittedly I have read VERY FEW ff.net fics, and most of those have been perfectly in-character angst.)

(The only reason I do not feel the same about Top Gear is that I barely read any fic before starting to write.)

[identity profile] amy-wolf.livejournal.com 2008-02-21 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Supernatural fandom's good enough to intimidate you? You're brilliant!

How good are they?

[identity profile] amy-wolf.livejournal.com 2008-02-21 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Even ones with squid in them?

[identity profile] amy-wolf.livejournal.com 2008-02-21 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
You try being locked in a cave with Ken Livingston's trained killer squid of death and tell me it's not serious!

Really though, I know what you mean. Most rent-boy AUs put me off, too.

[identity profile] dracothelizard.livejournal.com 2008-02-21 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, come on, there's got to be dreadful over the top fanfic where Dean cries a single emo tear, right? And Mary Sues? There have to be Mary Sues!

Also, that Haunter looks like it'll eat Dean.

[identity profile] wanttobeatree.livejournal.com 2008-02-21 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
The problem is, I think, that Dean cries single emo tears canonically.

[identity profile] amy-wolf.livejournal.com 2008-02-21 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, same problem as in Doctor Who fandom. Seriously, as much as I like David Tennant's acting, I wish he wouldn't produce a single tear trickling down his face nearly so much.

[identity profile] wanttobeatree.livejournal.com 2008-02-21 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my God, I know. I read my first Supernatural fanfic iiin October, I think? And now it's mid/late-February and I've only just started finding the not-so-good stuff. AND IT'S NOT EVEN THAT BAD.

On the plus side, it's something to aspire to, innit.

[identity profile] dorcas-gustine.livejournal.com 2008-02-21 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you ever read anything by [livejournal.com profile] flipmontgirl? Because she's fantastic.

Whoops, it's [livejournal.com profile] flipmontigirl! Sorry, should not write HTML while drunk.

[identity profile] calamitysxchild.livejournal.com 2008-02-21 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
the Supernatural fandom is seriously a gift from God to me, I swear. I've been a geek for fanfiction for years and years and the fact that the fanfics for this show are almost always amazing is like, a miracle to me haha. I never get bored and I've only once or twice read a pretty bad fic for this fandom.

Also, those icons are awesome.

[identity profile] hold-onhope.livejournal.com 2008-02-21 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
AHHHHH YOU HAVE TO STOP! I don't read much SPN fan fiction because, in my past experiences with fandom, it tends to screw with canon too much and destroy the fandom for me. So with SPN I've been trying to stay away, but you keep posting about it and Wincest and AHHHHHH! XD Why must the SPN fandom be SO AWESOME?!

[identity profile] ragingvirgin.livejournal.com 2008-02-29 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, just wanted to leave some love for the Dean/Haunter icons! (It doesn't help that I had a cracktastic dream involving me and the Winchesters existing in a pokéworld. Weird.)
