I Can't Believe George Washington Betrayed Me.
I've now finished Assassin's Creed III! Every moment that Haytham and Connor spent together was the greatest moment of my life. I can't believe 'hey, how great would it be if those two interacted?' didn't even occur to me until we got actual interaction. But I'm glad it didn't, because it was such an excellent surprise!
I've tried to keep my Assassin's Creed entries away from 'better put this under a cut' levels of spoilers, because I'm not sure who would actually read the entries in that case (there aren't many Assassin's Creed players still reading this journal), but I've failed miserably on this one. Big, big spoilers for the entirety of Assassin's Creed III under the cut.
I was SO OUTRAGED by the twist at the end of the Haytham section. He was talking about order and I was going 'ha ha, he sounds almost like a Templar' AND STILL I SUSPECTED NOTHING. One of the best-done twists I've ever seen: just let the player draw assumptions, not even realising they're doing it, and then kick their feet out from under them.
Storyline-wise, I've definitely found Assassin's Creed III the most engaging in the series so far. I shouted 'WHAT?' at the screen when Haytham turned out to be a Templar; I exclaimed 'No!' in horror when I stabbed Connor's childhood friend. I really enjoy Achilles and the deep-down fondness between him and Connor. I'm intrigued by Haytham's relationship with Ziio, and I can't find the words to express how much I love Haytham's hostile(-and-yet?) relationship with Connor. Chasing down Lee in the end was a nightmare, but I loved the weird sequence afterwards where I limped into the tavern, severely wounded but intent on stabbing him, and he offered me a seat and a drink, obviously aware that I was there to stab him. I approached Assassin's Creed III with some trepidation, as I'd heard a lot of criticism of it, and I have been extremely pleasantly surprised. The glitches can be frustrating, but everything else is so good.
I'd been spoiled for the fact that Connor would kill Haytham, and I was still devastated. But Haytham's final words were everything I could have wanted.
'Don't think I have any intention of caressing your cheek and saying I was wrong. I will not weep and wonder what might have been. I'm sure you understand. Still, I'm proud of you in a way. You have shown great conviction. Strength. Courage. All noble qualities. I should have killed you long ago.'
Perfect, perfect, perfect. What a twisted, fascinating relationship.
I was spoiled for Desmond's death months ago, although I didn't know the circumstances. I was shocked and appalled that Rebecca and Shaun didn't say goodbye before Desmond put his hand on the death machine. They just walked off! Seriously, not so much as a 'nice to work with you, thanks for sacrificing yourself for the good of the world'? SHAUN, I READ EVERY ONE OF YOUR DATABASE ENTRIES.
(I got weirdly sad about the database entries that popped up in the epilogue. Shaun, are you asking yourself who you're writing these for now? Are you just writing them out of habit?
I was also a bit sad about the blank Animus loading screen before the epilogue. 'Oh, Desmond isn't there because he's dead!' I exclaimed, troubled. My unsympathetic housemate considered this for a moment and then said, 'Deadsmond.')
The Assassin's Creed series frustrates me because there's a lot of fanfiction I'd like to write for it, but I know I'd get all the history horribly wrong. I hope I can find some way around that. I don't know exactly what I want to write about Haytham and Connor, but I know I want to write something.

(I love all your comments (and I'm very grateful that you read my videogame entries even though you don't play them yourself!), so you're permitted to read this. You know. Retroactively.)

Also, Desmond! All that time having his mind dissolve for the good of the world, then death!
(I like your entries, because they're all the story and plot elements of the video games, without the "Me getting stuck on the second level and doing the same fight unsuccessfully eleven million times" aspect.)

Have you considered modern au? God knows the world needs more of this dysfunctional duo in as many universes as possible.
(Also, wow, "Deadsmond," I snorted.)

(The AUs I write inevitably end up being either Pokémon or Silent Hill AUs, too. The Templars believe that Pokémon should be kept in their Pokéballs at all times! The Assassins believe that Pokémon should be free. This is a terrible idea; don't let me write it.)
Also, hello! It's nice to meet you! I'm delighted to see an Assassin's Creed fan around here.

And hi! It's nice too meet you too. I've recently started AC4; I really didn't think 3 could be topped, but 4 has just blown me away. It's everything the others were, but this time with pirates. (Also, sadly, without Desmond, but the pirates thing makes up for it.)

I haven't played AC (and with the way my gaming backlog is right now, I probably won't anytime soon) but this game sounds really cool. I love it when games do clever things with their interfaces and UI and relate it to the story. And that line you quoted is fantastic, oh man.
Anyway, you should totally write some fic! IMO, canons that already play around with historical accuracy can be pretty fun - there's more research required than a modern day piece, but there's still some leeway there and some opportunity to do some fun stuff.

I really like games doing clever things with their interfaces as well, and Assassin's Creed is constantly playing around with the idea that it's a game; it's framed as Desmond experiencing his ancestors' memories through a machine, so things like the minimap and 'this is your objective' messages don't exist in the present-day sections (when you're not in the machine). I also like the way there are in-universe nods to improvements from game to game. At the start of Assassin's Creed III, Rebecca sends you an excited e-mail about how she's updated the Animus to include weather effects and 'ANIMALS!!'
I'll certainly think about fic! I've found everything this game has taught me about the American Revolution interesting (we don't study it in British schools, so I didn't really know anything about it beforehand beyond 'taxes? people threw tea in the bay? George Washington crossed a stream or something?'); it might be fun to do some more research.
