Ka-boom!

Having managed a clumsy version of a dodge-roll out of harm’s way, I risked a glance back at the large boulder that had been flattened in my place and imagined myself fragmented into a million pieces like that. Ouch.

“Brother! Are you alright?” my one-eyed, hulk of a half-brother yelled out from his position as he tried to bat several dragon heads away with a seriously enormous tree branch.

“Fine, I’m fine!” I shouted, running from one angry dragon head only to be forced to avoid another by performing a second dodge-roll that would probably have several famous Greek heroes rolling in their graves.

Note to self: Practice more evasive maneuvers back at Camp Half-Blood.

“Just get the apple alrea—whoa!” one of Ladon’s many heads had managed to knock Riptide out of my hand and I watched in dismay as it went sailing through the air into some other sacred bush. It would be a couple of seconds before it would show up in my pocket as a pen, but a couple of seconds could mean the difference between me staying whole and me ending up as dragon chow.

I dove behind another soon-to-be-doomed rock, making a mental prayer to Athena for the tactical advantage of not being spotted, and then made a note of everyone else’s progress. Grover was busy trying to sweet-talk the Hesperides sisters into letting us through, but it wasn’t working if their throwing rocks at him was any indication. Annabeth was zig-zagging back and forth in complicated patterns, tricking the heads into tying their long, serpentine necks into knot formations I never even knew existed. When one got dangerously close, she took a flying leap out of the way while jamming an old, battered baseball cap on her head, disappearing suddenly as one of Ladon’s heads snapped at the air. A couple of minutes later she reappeared next to me, panting and red in the face. “Tell me again why we’re risking our lives to get immortality-giving golden apples for someone who’s already immortal?” she muttered, peering over the edge of the rook to watch Tyson’s attempt at feeding one head his branch-bat by shoving it into its wide open mouth.

“Look,” I shrugged helplessly, “I was all for picking up a nice, sea-themed tie at Myers. Or a swanky set of trident cufflinks maybe.”

Annabeth rolled her eyes at me.

“Tyson was the one who insisted we sneak up to the Oracle and check with her. You know how he is! It’s hard to say no to him when he gets that look on his face. Besides, I can’t exactly fight against him dragging me to the attic either.” I’m not sure how many kids can say the same when it comes to their little brother, but then again their little brother probably isn’t a cyclops who’s at least twice as strong as them. “How was I supposed to know the Oracle would give us a limerick about getting one of these stupid apples?”

“Think about that a little harder next time, Seaweed Brain,” she said before putting on her cap again and disappearing from sight.

I made a face, hoping she wasn’t still there to see it, and then felt a warmth in my pocket that meant Riptide had returned. Pulling the pen out and uncapping it quickly, I charged back into the fight with my bronze sword in hand with only one thought on my mind.

Dad had better appreciate this present for Father’s Day.
