Piskyo Is A Real Magikarp Of A Card.
I'm enjoying having a website!
Before I made it, I was concerned that maintaining a website might feel unrewarding, given that it's not really a format that encourages feedback. If you update your website, it can be hard to tell whether anyone saw the update at all.
But it feels good to have somewhere I can just talk as much as I like about Final Fantasy VIII! I've added a few new pages since I first mentioned the site here, and it's fun to watch it grow, even if there's no way of knowing whether anyone else is seeing the new additions. As perhaps evidenced by the fact that I've kept up this blog for twenty years, I just like talking about things I enjoy!
(If you're curious about what's changed, though, there's a rundown on the updates page!)
Just the fact that I have this site is encouraging me to think about new projects related to Final Fantasy VIII, too. The first romance fic I ever wrote - and, in fact, the first fic I ever completed - was I Need You, a short and terrible Squall/Zell fic I penned at the age of thirteen. Maybe it'd be fun to attempt to rewrite it now that a couple of decades have passed.
I'm trying to resist rereading the original until I've finished my rewrite, but I remember the concept made absolutely no sense. Here is the plot of my first ever attempt at romance:
- Zell creepily watches Squall while he sleeps, going ':( oh no I love him but he's got Rinoa'.
- Zell tells the sleeping Squall aloud that he loves him and kisses him on the forehead.
- Zell SUDDENLY PASSES OUT ON SQUALL'S BEDROOM FLOOR FOR NO REASON.
- Squall wakes up, finds Zell sleeping on his floor, goes 'seems normal' and puts Zell in the bed with him.
- As he drifts off again, Squall half-remembers Zell BEING CREEPY and murmurs, 'I think I love you too.'
Absolute nonsense. It's a real challenge to write something that follows a similar trajectory but actually feels in-character and halfway plausible. Dear thirteen-year-old Riona: if you want a character to fall asleep on the floor, there should probably be a reason!
I'm also having fun revisiting my old silly projects relating to this game. I managed to dig out my old homemade Triple Triad cards and post scans of them on the Triple Triad page. Please enjoy my ludicrous attempt to draw a Geezard, or the made-up card where I just drew a Neopet and gave it devil horns.
There's a part of me going, Hey, if you added the Balamb Garden flight deck, you could let visitors fly to locations from other Final Fantasy games. Please stay calm, Riona; let's at least try to keep this project on a reasonable scale.

Oh man, too funny. XD My efforts at writing fiction at that age were just like this. Things that I thought were dramatic and meaningful would just ~Happen~, with no consideration for whether they were logical or made any sense. It was so bad.

Yours looks great!

Working out what to use it for is definitely the hard part. The moment I went 'it might be fun to have a website based on this specific videogame location', everything fell into place: I knew what would be on there, I knew how it would be structured, I knew how it would be illustrated. But it's so tricky to find that initial concept!

...I'm certain that I have read that fic!!

Listen, I thought having a chat log (sorry, "skit") of characters cussing and pissing off The Producer was the height of comedy, so I really have no stones to throw here.

Anyway, in two days I will be done with the semester and I am so excited to aggressively peruse this site.

You make a compelling argument! I owe thirteen-year-old Riona an apology; turns out her fic made sense after all.
Congratulations on imminently being done with the semester! I hope the site is a welcome reward.

I say this with all honesty: everyone should make a website for something they really like. I don't care what it is! It doesn't have to be fancy, it can be very simple and straightforward, but the act of making something is so rewarding and I truly think everyone should try it. I'm glad Neocities is around to make it easy on folks.
Loved reading the new pages! I'm also being very genuine when I say this is one of my favorite FF8 sites. I've seen a lot over the years, and while there's something to be said for well-written analyses of plot and character, a site like this is much more fun and there's a lot of value in that.
I really need to reread your FF8/FF13 crossover! I know I enjoyed it when I read it, but it's been so many years that I should refresh my memory.

I think you might be right! I can definitely understand now why people with websites are so passionate about getting other people to make websites.
Thank you so much for your kind words! I have very little idea of what I'm doing when it comes to website construction, but I've poured plenty of enthusiasm into Balamb Garden, if nothing else, and I'm glad the result could be enjoyable.
I was just reminded recently that your comment on my Final Fantasy VIII/Final Fantasy XIII crossover was how we first met! I'm glad it could introduce us. If you do revisit it, I hope you have a good time!

EDIT: Also, hello! Just realised I think this is the first time we've actually spoken. It's good to meet you!

And thank you for the synopsis of your old Squall/Zell fic! I'm so amused by Squall's reaction to Zell passed out on the floor next to his bed: "Oh, it's no big deal. Just Zell being creepy." XD
if you want a character to fall asleep on the floor, there should probably be a reason!
Hmm, if Zell suddenly just passed out... maybe Ward needed to junction him to get through a rough shift at the prison? With all the shenanigans that go on in FF8, anything is possible! ;)

When I first glanced at your comment, I just saw 'Hmm, if Zell suddenly just passed out' and 'junction' and my mind immediately contributed the explanation 'maybe Zell junctioned Sleep to status attack and then accidentally punched himself in the face'. In many ways, my plotting skills have not improved since I was thirteen.

🤣🤣🤣
Okay, that is hilarious! And, quite frankly, not out of the realm of possibility, especially when it comes to Zell. That boy's a whirlwind of energy; I'm sure he's accidentally hit himself more than a couple of times.

that description of your first Squall/Zell fic made me laugh out loud sjdfhksjhdf that sounds just like the kind of fic I was writing back then. trying to do a rewrite of it would be a fun challenge imo

Your website is absolutely fantastic! I love love love the format and theme, excellent stuff. I love when websites have you click around and really explore the place. I love that you've gone 100% in on a theme. I'd love to put your site on my blogroll. Do you have/are you planning to make a site button? If not I will use plain text, but let me know if you have one :^)

while I watch episode 2 of FalloutI did not vault the barrier. I wish I had now, but it would seem disingenuous to go back and do so. (Whenever I am playing a video game for the first time and there's a choice-based component, I refuse to use a guide. I do what I do and get the ending I get. Apparently, I'm treating your website the same way.)
You linked the Balamb Garden score and it started playing calmly in my head. Yes, calmly. It's a very calm theme.
Your explanation of how 13 year-old you related to Squall is so endearing.
(Linus from Lost is in this episode of Fallout, if that's a thing you care about.)
After Selphie made me stick around and help her rebuild the quad (I wonder how much of that is her distracting herself so she doesn't worry about Trabia), I head to the cafeteria for a hot dog. You would think the cafeteria of a mercenary school would be a bit more military rations-based.
I also wonder if part of the reason Zell enrolled in Garden was because his friends from the orphanage were there. There's definitely no canonical basis for that - it's entirely speculation - but it would make sense!
This is possible! He wouldn't have used a GF prior to enrolling, so he would have held onto his memories for considerably longer. This quickly snowballed into a mental quagmire of, "so he probably knew he was adopted right up until he started using GFs, which would have been... in or around the time of the field exam qualifier?" and, "or was it before then, and he just went home one weekend and forgot he wasn't biologically a Dincht?" and, "wow, that must have fucked his mother up if so."
If Square ever remade Final Fantasy VIII with voice acting, I wonder how they'd handle Squall's thoughts. They're such a huge part of Squall's character, but it could feel awkward to have a constant voiceover of his interior monologue.
They did this with Yuna in parts of FFX-2 and I found it quite charming!
Good, you also love Laguna/Raine. We can continue being friends.
I saw this: The image of NORG comes from The Models Resource. And realised I hadn't seen a picture of NORG yet and had to hunt it down on the pages left unscoured. BUJURURURURU!
I found it and
OH THANK GOD HE SAID IT
HE SAID THE THING
Now I can go on with my life.
(Linus has a dog with a stuffed animal. I am supremely compromised already.)
This may be a little more controversial, but I don't think the bad behaviour is only from Squall's side.
Not controversial at all. I completely agree, as you well know! (And it's very weird that Quistis is framed as lonely and isolated when there's an entire group of people desperate to get to know her and spend time with her. A smarter game would have recognised that maybe she was uncomfortable with that attention and had her realise she was being as pushy toward Squall.)
omg whyona
AND I AM DONE
That was super charming! 😊 I'm glad it exists.

Your comment got the Balamb Garden theme stuck in my head in turn. (It is very calm.)
Vaulting the barrier doesn't really change much, but it would be funny if it got you thrown out of the Garden halfway though exploring the website. (Originally, when I was still building the basic website, I just included the 'vault the barrier' option as a way to make it clear 'this website isn't finished, you're not supposed to be able to get in here, but you can if you really want to look around'. I ended up keeping it even after officially opening the site because it amused me.)
(I wonder how much of that is her distracting herself so she doesn't worry about Trabia)
This is an excellent observation and makes me very sad.
Your speculation on Zell forgetting he was adopted is fascinating. Oh, wow. I wonder how long it would take his mother to realise what's happened in his head; it's the sort of thing that could easily go unnoticed for a long time.
I'm very pleased that the reference section sent you on a NORG hunt. It's important to say hi to NORG.
A smarter game would have recognised that maybe she was uncomfortable with that attention and had her realise she was being as pushy toward Squall.
This would have been such a good addition for their dynamic! Quistis is on the lower end of my Final Fantasy VIII character ranking; I wonder if I'd like her more if the game had included this.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I have hugely enjoyed your liveblogging of my site (and Fallout).
