Must've Missed It.

Made an actual Silent Hill 2 edit of the Softer World strip I named my recent James/Mary fic after, because A Softer World and Silent Hill 2 are both totally timely and I know what year it is. I can't believe this strange, dark pairing still has so much power over my heart, all these years later.
The Final Fantasy VII Remake demo is now available on PS4! Just as a heads-up, it's about an hour long and you cannot save. Thoughts:
- Cloud is so pretty. Everyone is so pretty.
- You can't jump, alas! I keep accidentally opening the menu because I want to leap around pointlessly like you can in Final Fantasy XV.
- Cloud and Jessie have more chemistry than I'd expected. Huh. I loved them exchanging glances and shrugs while Barret lectured them in the elevator.
- I'll be very entertained if this remake not only reignites the ferocious Cloud/Tifa versus Cloud/Aerith shipwars but adds a Cloud/Jessie faction.
- I enjoyed Barret going 'okay, now prove you're one of us' and Cloud going 'uh, I'm... not?'
- Guard Scorpion struck me as an unreasonably tough, lengthy first boss fight. Nearly wiped out my supply of twenty-something potions. Maybe I just need to get a better grasp of the battle system? I think it's possible to switch difficulty levels mid-playthrough, so at least I'll be able to shift down if I continue to struggle in the full game.
- I really wanted them to have an 'attack while its tail is up' joke during that fight, but alas no.
- I don't remember any other voiced Final Fantasy in which the characters swear, and I am not yet used to it. At one point Cloud said 'no shit' and my reaction was very much 'gasp, he said a naughty word'.
- If you run into the security lasers five times, Jessie will stop expressing concern and start laughing at you. If you run into the lasers ten times, Jessie will ask, 'Um, do you have a fetish or something?'
- So far, it's looking promising!

That's funny.
I feel like that should be in fic.

If this remake doesn't spawn Cloud Strife laser fetish fanfiction, the entire Final Fantasy fandom has failed me.

I can make no promises, but-------you know, with that in mind, that makes his incorrect statement about the tail laser in the original game take on a TOTALLY different meaning.

I need to play it at some point, I reeeeeeeeeeally do.

Ha, this made me smile!
I love how weirdly inconsistent the censoring of Barret's dialogue is in the original. At one point he says, two lines apart, '&$#%!! You lucky ^$#^$!' and 'Shit! The hell you so calm about?'

Okay, I'm going to download the demo just so I can hear this. I wasn't planning on playing the demo because I can't afford the game at this time, but this sounds too good to pass up.

I need to get to checking out the FF7R demo.

And yeah, I was a little surprised, too, when one of the first words out of Jessie's mouth was, "He sure has balls--" Me: *GASP*
SE has gotten so much back in response to the mistranslation of the tail laser bit that I think they were bound and determined to NOT have it in there. (Amusingly, there is a reference to it in FFXIV.)
The battle system gets easier after the first time. Scorpion fight was hard for me first time, too, but one thing I found was helpful was going into the options menu and changing the buttons for switching what creatures are locked on.
Also, I haven't had the chance to really try it, but switching Cloud from Operator to Punisher mode counts as a block, which means he reacts with a super strong counter. I also found that when I relaxed and just let myself use abilities and spells more, things went better.
(hahahaha it took an embarrassingly long time for me to realize that Barret had the cure spell ;_;)
Anyway, last time I tried it with the regular combat system, it... it's not quite second nature but much easier!
I love so much of this, that I won't go through the full list, here, but... I love so much of this.
(OH! And before I forget, definitely replay the demo. There's an extra bit with Sephiroth at the end. Just a tease, but still...)

I actually got the Sephiroth clip! I think you get it for setting the bomb timer to the shorter option, rather than replaying the demo. Maybe I should try to replay at some point anyway, though, just to get a more solid grasp of the battle system.
but one thing I found was helpful was going into the options menu and changing the buttons for switching what creatures are locked on.
Oh, I'll give that a try! Thank you.

And I fully encourage experimenting with Punisher mode. It's very satisfying to Focus Thrust an enemy into Stagger, turn on Punisher, let Cloud go through a full combo, and if they aren't finished yet then follow through with Braver.
Bonus points when it's the Sweeper or Shock Troopers!

I'm so glad it's not just me! My reaction was basically "this is the first boss fight? I'm fearing Jenova now".
Original game wasn't this difficult, I swear. Maybe I need to replay the demo a few times and learn the new system, as you say. After all, we still have over a month left before the game comes out.
On shipping: As someone who never got into Cloud/Tifa or Cloud/Aerith (I'm on camp "ship Tifa and Cloud with the guy that destroyed their hometown and lives" because I live for the drama), I'm sooo joining the Cloud/Jessie faction. I love their interactions, that tiny smile that Cloud gives Jessie towards the end is wonderful! :3

Ha, it's a good camp!

I'm with you on this! I love both Cloud and Aerith as characters, but I've never shipped them at all. The Cloud/Jessie interaction in the demo, meanwhile, was unexpectedly great and I'm looking forward to more.

I'll be very entertained if this remake not only reignites the ferocious Cloud/Tifa versus Cloud/Aerith shipwars but adds a Cloud/Jessie faction.
I shipped both Cloud/Aeris and Cloud/Tifa when I played the original game, and was expecting the remake to make me choose between the two. But so far, it looks as though the remake wants me to ship something else entirely. ;)
If you run into the security lasers five times, Jessie will stop expressing concern and start laughing at you. If you run into the lasers ten times, Jessie will ask, 'Um, do you have a fetish or something?'
...I rest my case.
Also, I love your edit of the Softer World strip!

Thank you so much!

I also played the demo! It was great. From what I've seen online, the thirst for Jessie is real. It probably also helps she's got the same VA as Futaba from Persona 5.
I played the demo twice, mostly to get used to the battle system. The Guard Scorpion was a bit easier once I had a better understanding of what I was doing. My first time I mostly played as Barret (because I love him and he deserves more attention) but realized switching back and forth and using my abilities liberally was a much more viable strategy (and whacking it to death while in Punisher mode haha)
I've mostly team Cloud/Tifa and Tifa/Aerith (and totally open to Cloud/Tifa/Aerith) but I'll accept Jessie into the shipping war. Sure, why not? I wonder if anyone will ship her with Biggs. Biggs is stupid handsome, and voiced by Balthier. He deserves love.

I'm glad to hear the Guard Scorpion gets easier on a replay! Maybe there's hope for me yet.
(and totally open to Cloud/Tifa/Aerith)
Ooh. I've never really shipped Cloud/Tifa or Cloud/Aerith, but this I might be able to get behind.
I was very surprised to learn that Biggs was voiced by Gideon Emery! I always thought that guy only had one voice. (A great voice, but still.)

Like I said on the WAYPW post, I was not going to get the FF7R demo, but ... I changed my mind. Mrs. Samu and I both played through it, and I am optimistic about the full game.
And there has always been a Cloud / Jessie faction. :-) This will be a good excuse for me to repost that story.

Absolutely! I imagine the demand for Cloud/Jessie is going to explode, and you're going to be right there to cater to it.
